Spectator Sports in Devon

Watching top national sportspeople or rooting for your local team - events at Devon's great sporting venues make for a memorable day out.

Devon's three football clubs, Exeter City, Plymouth Argyle and Torquay United, all have their devoted following, so join in the enthusiastic support. If rugby league is your game, then seek out Plymouth Albion and Exeter Chiefs to cheer them on to victory. Prefer the more informal approach? Both sports have local leagues so you can watch tournaments all over Devon, with both male and female teams. Basketball also features in Devon, with the Plymouth Raiders leading the field.

Horse racing is always a great day out, and the full calendars at the magnificent racecourses at Newton Abbot and Exeter will give you something to remember with pleasure. Less dramatic, but equally good fun, are show jumping and pony club events at various centres in Devon.

In estuaries and along the coast join in the cheering for local teams in a whole range of regattas held over the summer, at Dartmouth, Salcombe, Bideford, Shaldon, Torbay... At sea look out for the prestigious Transat Race, an offshore solo sailing event, which Plymouth is hosting.
