Devon Coast to Coast (NCN 27)

The Devon Coast to Coast (NCN Route 27) links Ilfracombe on the north coast with Plymouth on the south coast for a distance of 102 miles/163km.

This is a classic route through the heart of Devon, which is traffic-free for extensive sections, with over 40% along former railway lines.

It goes through tunnels and across breathtaking viaducts and bridges, taking in spectacular views, the beaches and estuaries of north Devon, lush green river valleys, the moorlands of Dartmoor, market towns and the bustling city if Plymouth.

Whether you are planning a long weekend trip across Devon or an easy day's cycling from Plymouth, Okehampton or Barnstaple, this route is the way to explore the varied countryside without using a car.

There are also many links and spurs to explore and enjoy, such as the Sticklepath Cycle Route from Okehampton or the link from Clearbrook to the Bere Peninsular cycle route. There is also an unsigned route across mid Devon using minor roads, that can be busy at times, between Hatherleigh via Winkleigh and Eggesford to the Tarka Rail Line.

Towns on Route: The route runs via Braunton, Barnstaple, Bideford, Great Torrington, Hatherleigh, Okehampton and around the edge of Dartmoor National Park to Tavistock and Plymouth.

Facilities along route: There are many large towns on the route which have plenty of facilities, including refreshment opportunities and cycle shops.

Notes on route: This route continues to be developed by improve the extent of the traffic free sections and the attractiveness of the on-road sections. Some short sections are interim and therefore may not be to full National Cycle Network standard, these are being continuously improved and upgraded.
