Active Devon > Fishing in Devon > Devon's Fishing Seasons and Permits
Before you can get going on your perfect Devon fishing trip, you will need to buy yourself a rod licence and also check up on local fishing seasons.
If you are fishing for salmon, sea trout, trout, freshwater fish or eels in any water in England, you need a rod fishing licence from the Environment Agency - or risk facing a hefty fine! You can buy EA licences from any post office; you have a choice of one-day, eight-day or a year, and over-65s and people with disabilities get concessionary rates. The lucky under 12s, however, fish for free. You also need permission to fish from the owner of your chosen fishery - rates vary.
You can fish in rivers for most of the summer and autumn, but you should check the dates for the river you have chosen. Each river has its own opening dates - and these dates are different again for each species, such as salmon, brown trout, rainbow trout or grayling.
