Leaving Crediton the route passes through an area of historic parkland at Shobrooke and then follows the Creedy, a major tributary of the River Exe, past the village of Newton St. Cyres.
Before the Creedy meets the Exe the Way climbs a low ridge separating the two rivers and through Upton Pyne to arrive at the picturesque village of Brampford Speke, sitting by the Exe.
The Exe is crossed here and an old railway followed to arrive at the Heartland Way's eastern terminus of Stoke Canon, a little way north of Exeter.
