The valley of the River Erme leaves Dartmoor heading for the sea, and for the 5 miles between Ivybridge, on the edge of the moor, and the main road between Plymouth and Kingsbridge at Sequer's Bridge, the Trail follows this valley.

Between Sequer's Bridge and the village of Brixton, 7.5 miles to the west, the Trail runs parallel to the road, sometimes north of it and sometimes south, passing through an attractive wooded and pastoral landscape on the edge of the South Devon Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty.
