Active Devon / Walking in Devon / Long Distance Walking Trails in Devon / Tarka Trail
Inspired by Henry Williamson's much loved novel "Tarka the Otter" which was based on real places, this 180 miles recreational route, in a figure of eight, follows Tarka's journeys through the northern part of the county. Whether you are a fan of the book or not, the trail takes you through an ever changing variety of some wonderful Devon scenery, including tranquil countryside, wooded river valleys, rugged moorland and dramatic coast.
Part of the route takes in the scenic Tarka Line railway (which runs from Barnstaple to Exeter) where there are routes to discover and explore in nearby villages. Comprehensively waymarked, walking along the trail varies from easy to challenging.
Short sections of the trail and circular walks from it are ideal for day and half day walks. The trail has parallel bus and/or train routes to allow for short lengths to be walked. For up-to-date timetable information call the Traveline on 0870 608 2608 or visit www.traveline.org.uk
