This is a quiet and remote part of Devon. The Trail passes through woodland, over high airy download and along hedged lanes.

The historical theme of the route is continued as it passes an iron-age hill fort in which a small Norman castle was built, crosses the site of a Dark-Age battleground between Saxons and Celts, and visits the church of the Victorian vicar famous for writing "Onward Christian Soldiers". The last length is on the line of a Roman road.
