Visit this rare restored survivor of medieval England, dating from 1340-1480, with a fascinating history. Built by the Gilbert family and still their home today.

Towers, buttresses and battlements, curtain wall, Great Hall and more. Children's trail available.

Dramatic fortified manor house dating from 1340-1480, the castle has been lived in by the Gilbert family for most of the last 600 years and is still their home today. Sir Humphrey Gilbert was coloniser of Newfoundland and half-brother to Sir Walter Raleigh.

Within the curtain wall can be found the Old Kitchen with spiral staircase to the Guard Room, reconstructed Great Hall - where more can be learnt of the Gilbert family and their Elizabethan explorations - Solar and Chapel. There are also Rose and Knot Gardens.

Road Directions

Signposted off A380 to Marldon (not suitable for coaches) or turn south for A381 Totnes Road at Ipplepen - 2 ml to Compton.

Public Transport Directions

Bus: Stagecoach Devon 7 Paignton - Marldon; First 111 Dartmouth - Torquay (passing Totnes); 66 Brixham - Torquay.
On all, alight Marldon 1.5 ml.
Station: Torquay 5 ml. Newton Abbot 6ml.
