Devon's Film, TV and Book Locations

Know the feeling when you walk around a corner and think you've been there before? You might well do that in Devon, even on your first visit, for our beautiful unspoilt countryside and delightful towns and villages have been the setting for many a film and TV drama. Why not make a voyage of discovery to track down your favourites?

TV is well represented: the immortal Fawlty Towers was set in Torquay, and some of the Hornblower series was filmed in Plymouth. More recently, Jam and Jerusalem has been diverting North Tawton's Women's Institute, Down to Earth takes to the Devon countryside, and even The Bill has made a foray out to Dartmoor.

The BBC adaption of Sense & Sensibility found a perfect home in Devon at the Hartland Abbey estate in North Devon, and The Remains of the Day, Rebecca, Land Girls and The French Lieutenant's Woman all owe much of their charm to filming locally.

Authors too delight in Devon's dramatic scenery. Remember the Hound of the Baskervilles, haunting the wilds of Dartmoor, or Lorna Doone, roaming Exmoor's hidden valleys; Tarka the Otter hunted in the bright rivers around Barnstaple. Agatha Christie famously found much of her inspiration from Torquay and South Devon.
