Visit either of Devon's two great cities, Exeter and Plymouth, and you're in for a historic treat. Centuries of dramatic history sweeping over them have left their mark in a myriad fascinating ways.

Exeter's story reaches way back to Roman times, when the first encampment in the south west was built to control the unruly natives; you can still see the splendid Roman military bath and walk the walls. Since then Exeter has grown to be a regional centre of great importance, at its heart the magnificent cathedral and close.

With over 1600 listed buildings, Exeter is a wonderful place to explore and enjoy, especially the mediaeval Guildhall and underground passages, built to carry the pipes bringing fresh water into the city.

In Plymouth you never forget that this is a great maritime city, with all the heritage of a historic port. Thousands of voyages of trade and discovery set out from its quays - Drake attacking the Spanish, the Pilgrim Fathers setting sail in the Mayflower, Cook voyaging to the southern seas.
