Historic Houses in Devon

Enjoy a glimpse into the lives of the rich and famous of bygone days in Devon's historic houses; there are plenty to choose from! Wander round their beautiful gardens and spacious grounds for stunning views and an escape from everyday life.

Regebcy Arlington Court is crowded with the family treasures, plus a terrific collection of horse-drawn vehicles. Elegant Georgian Saltram, with its fine Adam interiors, has wonderful paintings and delicate plasterwork ceilings. Gracious Killerton House boasts a splendid costume collection of over 9000 outfits.

The home of the Earls of Devon for over 600 years, Powderham Castle's roots are deep in the past. Buckland Abbey, once a Cistercian abbey, is famed for its association with Sir Francis Drake, who bought it from Sir Richard Grenville.

For a hint of eccentricity, visit A La Ronde, a 16-sided 18th century house built specially for two cousins. If your taste runs to the truly magnificent, then Oldway Mansion is not to be missed. This enormous house was enlarged in the 19th century by the Singer family of sewing machine fame into an imitation of the Palace of Versailles.
