Buckland's peaceful setting today belies its swashbuckling past, brought to life through exhibitions and galleries showing new introductory film, and computer interactives. See Drake's Drum, plasterwork ceilings and the fascinating kitchen. Beautiful new Elizabethan garden and family events.

Originally a Cistercian monastery in the secluded valley of the River Tavy with associations with Sir Francis Drake. The ruins of the 13thC abbey church, a magnificent tythe barn, herb garden, craft workshops in the courtyard, exhibits of seafaring items from the time of Drake. Furnished period rooms. Restaurant.

Tucked away in its own secluded valley above the River Tavy, Buckland was originally a small but influential Cistercian monastery. The house, incorporating the remains of the 13th-century abbey church, has rich associations with Sir Francis Drake and his seafaring rival, Sir Richard Grenville, and contains much interesting memorabilia from their time. There are exhibitions on Buckland's history as well as a magnificent monastic barn, delightful estate walks and craft workshops. Recent developments include new interpretive exhibitions and displays, a hand-crafted plasterwork ceiling in the Drake Chamber and the creation of an Elizabethan garden.

Garden:
Largely a 20th century creation with box hedge parterre filled with over 50 different herbs and a thyme garden. Magnolia Delavayi and M. Grandiflora grow against the Abbey. A new Elizabethan garden has been created.
