Heritage Events in Devon

Devon people rightly cherish their rich history. Goose fairs, mediaeval mummers, music and flaming tar barrels all blend to give you wonderfully memorable events. You can try your hand, too, at traditional sports like archery and falconry, and eat your fill at ram roasts.

Goose fairs, such as Tavistock or Colyford, have for centuries been important events for local farming folk - now trading, business and gossip mix with some distinctly modern additions!

Fascinated by ancient ceremonies? Devon has them aplenty! Try Ottery St Mary's flaming tar barrels, Ashburton's bread weighing and ale tasting ceremonies or the 'Hunting of the Earl of Rone' at Coombe Martin. Even tiny villages have their own unique traditions, like the running of the Black Dog at Morchard Bishop and Black Dog.

If you are lucky enough to hit Devon the first weekend in September look out for the Heritage Open Days, a celebration of architecture and culture - hidden treasures not usually open to the public can been seen all over the county, from the roof of mighty Exeter cathedral to South Tawton's ancient Church house.
