In c1259, a new altar or chapel was dedicated at the Church of Sancte Marie de Ottery, but it is likely there was a church in existence long before. In c1337, the Bishop of Exeter founded his College of Canons in Ottery St Mary, and enlarged the small church, modelling it upon the cathedral "in Exeter. The building was completed in c1342. The college "was dissolved by Henry VIII in c1545. Given 5 star rating "in "England's Thousand Best Churches"."
