Is your preference for the traditional? Then pick an event steeped in heritage - the Colyford Goose Fair, the Town Criers championships at Newton Abbot, or Lustleigh's May Day celebrations.

More musically inclined? Sidmouth Folk Week celebrates world music in a carnival atmosphere, and both Dartmouth and Shaldon run music festivals with a classic flavour. North Devon Festival, besides showcasing the cultural life of the area, draws in top talent from further afield. Words take their place in Shakespeare productions under the stars and Dartington's Way with Words festival.

Who doesn't love balloons, the bigger the better? The Westcountry Balloon Fiesta and Day at the Races in Tavistock is the place to see them soaring up in their dozens.

Beer festivals, celebrations of the English apple, farmers' markets and food festivals at Exeter, Tavistock and Dartmouth give ample opportunities to sample many of Devon's delicious products. And you'll find local food much in evidence too at the many local fairs - ram roasts a speciality!

For the energetic, there are the North Devon walking and cycling festival, Goldcoast Oceanfest or the Dartmoor Classic Cyclosportive.
