Stand quietly anywhere in Devon's countryside and just listen. Birds calling, maybe a deer crashing through the undergrowth, insects buzzing, trees rustling - you can almost hear the plants growing! Devon is literally alive with millions of creatures, all waiting to be discovered by families of intrepid explorers.
Scattered all over Devon are wildlife havens, so just take your pick! Devon Wildlife Trust runs over 40 sites, all packed with wild things. Many have tracks for easy walking and some are good enough for pushchairs. Ramble round Devon's lakes or estuaries to spot birds and flowers, or take to the woods for the excitement of coming across the shy creatures that live there. And with over 33,000 miles of hedgerows, make every day a safari of mini-beast discovery.
For a day out packed with interest visit one of Devon's wildlife centres. Berry Head at Torbay has thousands of seabirds, plus the bonus of fortifications from the time of Napoleon. At Haldon Forest Park you can follow a sensory trail, wander the woods or ride bikes on traffic-free routes. Children love unearthing the secrets of nature in Becky Falls Woodland Park or paddling in waterfalls.
Check locally for fascinating wildlife walks - bat-watches, badger trails, bug-hunts and rockpool quests.
