Naturally Devon > Green Attractions > Wildlife in Devon
Wherever you stay in Devon, you'll find wildlife right on your doorstep. With 210 sites of special scientific interest, dozens of nature reserves and 33, 000 miles of hedgerows, the variety of plants, birds and animals for you to discover is truly amazing.
Visit one of Devon's estuaries, natural havens for wildlife, to spot thousands of wading birds, flocks of Brent geese, maybe rarities such as the stone curlew, broad-billed sandpiper, avocet, short-eared owl or Cirl bunting. Stride across moorland hearing the cries of curlew, stonechat and willow warbler and, in winter, woodcock and snipe.
Wander through marshland alive with marbled white butterflies, azure damselflies, six-spot burnet moths and great green bush crickets. Or explore caves, home to the rare Bechstein's and horseshoe bats. Spy a shy otter, brown hare and Dartmoor's red deer, or drop down to Lyme Bay for seven types of coral, and masses of anemones, sponges and sea squirts. Stroll along deep Devon lanes where the banks are covered in spring flowers.
Follow nature trails across heathland and discover spotted orchid, bog asphodel and devil's bit scabious. Take an organised bird-watching trip, go on a bug hunt or rock-pool ramble. Enjoy the rich diversity of our wildlife - we do!
