Green Tourism Business Scheme

In a busy world we all enjoy the opportunity to switch off and relax. This award allows you to do just that.

The Green Tourism Business Scheme (GTBS) award recognises places to stay and visit that are taking action to support the local area and the wider environment. Businesses are judged every two years by independent experts and awarded either:

The higher the level of award the more action that is being taken. All GTBS award winners have demonstrated that they are taking action across a wide range of areas such as:

• Energy and water efficiency
• Waste reduction
• Support for local residents and suppliers
• Use of ethical products
• Promoting alternatives to the car
• Contributing to wildlife and the environment

Much of this takes place behind the scenes, but you may notice a greater range of local, organic fair trade or natural products, separate bins for recycling, and invitations for you to join with their efforts, whether it be giving your car a day off, enjoying the local wildlife or having the towels changed only when you ask.

Far from being back to basics, many of the actions taken by the business will add to your comfort and enjoyment. All you need to do is 'Look for the Leaf' when travelling in the South West.

To Good to Be True?
All award winners have been evaluated by an independent qualified assessor through a half-day visit to the business. Using a 'walk-a-round' of all relevant areas, examination of records and discussion with staff, they assess the extent of the business' effort.

These assessment visits are repeated every other year and also provide the business with helpful advice as to where they can continue improving.
