In the 50's the hotel was best known as "Best Hotel West Of The Ritz" and today it has been restored to its 1930 heyday by the present owners, who are passionately involved in the day to day running of hotel.
The aim is to create a evocation - not a literal translation - of the art deco era. All restored, original furniture and artefacts, bespoke soft furnishings in 30's textiles and authentic music wafting through the hotel ( live on Wednesdays and Saturdays dinner dances), we have no TVs mini bars or even guaranteed mobile phone reception. But we do have fabulous menus, 24 hour room service and original bakelite telephones throughout.
The food has won consistent praise since our chef Conor Heneghan took over the kitchen in 2002. Our style is best described as Clean European and uses local produce eg fish, meat and dairy products to create integral dishes with balanced texture and flavour. Definitely in the fore front of modern cuisine.
Hotel is open all year and relaxation and atmosphere guaranteed. Our rooms are all different in size, colours and finish. All have bathrooms and often dramatic sea views. Many are suites with comfortable sitting rooms and most have balconies. The rooms retain the proportions, and preserve the integrity, of this rare example of British Art Deco Style. Imagine our hotel as an ocean liner, moored off the South Devon coast.
