Situated on the River Axe, this small, unspoilt market town is famed worldwide for its carpet making. Invented by Thomas Whitty in 1775 on a design similar to Turkish carpets, Caster Hill House, where the carpets were originally produced can still be seen today. Other historical sites of interest in the town include the museum and church.
The town has many quaint streets radiating out from the central square. Just to the south west of Axminster is the National Trust property of Shute Barton Manor, which claims to have the largest fireplace in England and possibly the world!
Axminster is perfectly situated to access the Blackdown Hills, Hardy’s Dorset and the picturesque coastal resort of Lyme Regis.
Located just off the A35 on the B3261.
Axminster is on the main South West Trains line from Waterloo to Exeter.
