Picture: Action on the 2007 rally

Organised by the South Hams Motor Club, the gruelling 500 mile rally starts at mid-day on Friday at Newton Abbot Racecourse, with the route taking in some of the most beautiful parts of Devon and Cornwall. Crews take a well earned rest on Friday night before taking to the woods again, finishing late on Saturday night in Plymouth. The competitive motoring takes place on private land and in the forests, combining a testing mixture of asphalt and gravel forest roads. Competitors are coming from as far a field as Malta to sample some of the best rallying the country has to offer.

Sponsored by enthusiastic local motor group, AudiSouthWest.com, the event is the second round of the National Endurance Championship promoting “Revival” rallies which Clerk of the Course, Roger Pinder from Loddiswell said; “is all about having fun at little expense.” He added; “South Hams Motor Club has always been about fun on four wheels - no expensive cars or service crews here – just a bag of tools and good preparation!”

All the “Endurance” rally cars are under 1400cc and use road going tyres. This type of rally really is growing in popularity because of the low costs involved – up to 80 cars are expected to start the rally. Many are bought for a few hundred pounds on eBay! A safety rollover bar and a few minor safety modifications are required before the cars can compete. Frequently known as “shopping cars”, the most popular are Peugeots, Vauxhall Novas and Rovers.
