The Way leaves Exmouth along the Exe Estuary, offering superb views over this wide and picturesque waterway.
At the village of Lympstone it turns inland and climbs gently to reach the East Devon Commons. These high areas of uncultivated heathland not only form a superb landscape in their own right, but also give the opportunity for far-reaching views back over the Exe Estuary as well as over the coast to the south.
There is then a descent over attractive farmland to the valley of the River Otter, which is crossed just north of the village of Newton Poppleford.
