Devon Beaches

No holiday in Devon is complete without a trip to the beach - and Devon's beaches are some of the best and cleanest in the world - and you don't have to take just our word for it! In fact, in 2007, 16 of our best Devon beaches were given the prestigious Blue Flag award (more than any other county in England), guaranteeing the highest of standards.

If sand is what you are seeking, Devon has masses. Go for the glorious three-mile arc of Woolacombe's golden sand or the two mile stretch at Exmouth - and you have plenty more to choose from. Build sand-castles, fly kites and play cricket - there's miles of space for everyone.

Or choose peaceful expanses miles from the crowds - there are many scattered all along the North Devon coast, the South Devon coast, the East Devon coast and around Torbay - find your own quiet cove where you will only be disturbed by the sound of the waves crashing along the shore.

For those who enjoy getting active, the beaches in Devon provide the perfect opportunity to burn some calories - enjoy the great surfing, snorkelling and other watersports Devon lays on for its visitors.

Blue Flag Beaches
We are rightly proud of our superb top-class beaches in Devon. Indeed 16 of our beaches have been awarded with Blue Flag status (nearly half the total for the whole of the South West region!) - so the quality of water, safety and facilities is guaranteed.

To search for our Blue Flag Beaches, use the search box on the right, and choose the "Type" as 'Beach' and make sure you tick the box next to "Green Accreditation".

Blue Flag is an international award scheme which checks coastal destinations for the quality of their water, facilities, safety and environmental education and environment. Because the award is only given for a year, you can be sure that any beach carrying the award, is maintaining its world-class quality.

Over the years, the scheme has acted as an incentive to beach managers to improve the quality of the coast, and this hard work has led to a revival in the coastline in many places throughout the world.

In England the scheme is administered by ENCAMS (Environmental Campaigns, an environmental charity which also runs Keep Britain Tidy).
