Bere Alston (Grid Ref SX 447 668).
This route is just one of many in the West Devon area. It is based around the Bere Peninsular, where the Rivers Tavy and Tamar meet, on the very south western side of Devon. The peninsular grew in importance when silver was discovered in the area in the 12th century, and shared in the local mining boom of the 19th century.
The surrounding countryside is part of the Tamar Valley Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty and possesses some of the finest scenery in the West Country. Furthermore, the estuary is an important haven for wildlife, such as the avocet and little egret.
Relevant maps/guides: Explorer (1:25,000) No. OL 108 Lower Tamar Valley & Plymouth; Landranger (1:50,000) no. 201 Plymouth & Launceston, Tavistock & Looe.
Facilities along route: There are pubs in Bere Alston and Bere Ferrers, but the nearest cycle hire is in Tavistock.
Please note that this is not a Devon County Council maintained route.
This route takes in both settlements of Bere Alston and Bere Ferrers, as well as both the Tamar and the Tavy rivers.
Why not try a circular trip from Plymouth? Catch the scenic Tamar Valley Line to Bere Alston and then cycle the Bere Peninsular route to Collytown, where you can join the Lopwell Dam Cycle route. This in turn links up with the Plym Valley Trail, which you can then cycle back to Plymouth.
