We teach English to adults aged 28 plus, in a relaxed, beautiful and peaceful setting in the countryside. Come to Tinavor for a short intensive English course in a small group or for individual tuition centred on your language needs and interests. Lessons (30 Hours a Week) Most of our students have an intermediate level of English or above. We use the spoken language the students bring to the group as a starting point. We have the opportunity to look at fluency and a natural style of speaking, language structures, pronunciation, writing, reading and listening depending on the interests and needs of the individual and the group. The groups are very small, we can, therefore, support the students in an individual way. With all courses we can include theme or work based presentations, discussions or more informal conversation. As well as the group lessons there is some individual tutorial time with the teacher. Students have the opportunity to meet local people, artists etc in their homes, workshops or studios, for authentic, informal ‘in conversation’ sessions. Courses at English on Dartmoor are not suitable for beginners. Tinavor Time ‘Tinavor Time’ is an opportunity for private study, gardening, going for walks and bicycle rides, drawing or just relaxing. It is up to you. We make a weekly trip to the lively market town of Totnes with its interesting and unusual shops and cafes. Evenings/Weekends Evening trips to a Devon pub or a concert, film etc. can be arranged. We usually go to a restaurant during the last week of a course (optional). There is a weekly 'musicans night' in one of the village pubs. Weekends are free-time, either to spend at Tinavor or travel further afield. Devon and Cornwall are both popular holiday areas with many places of interest including Exeter, Torquay, St Ives, The Eden Project and Lands End. Students are encouraged to be involved with activities at Tinavor, cooking, gardening, music making etc. Tinavor Cottage was built circa 1750. It has a mature garden with many trees including an oak tree estimated to be 350-500 years old, a small vegetable patch and pond. It is a 5 minute ride by bicycle or a 15-minute walk across the fields and along the River Avon to South Brent. From the house it is a short walk to the open moorland of Dartmoor. South Brent is a small village with 2 pubs, 1 cafe, a baker, 2 food shops, a newsagent, post office, health centre, dentist, several churches and a few small shops and businesses. There is also a small art gallery.
