Start/End point: Bampton (Grid Ref: SS955224).
This route offers wonderful views of the Exe Valley, as well as the rolling hills of Mid Devon and Bampton, a town full of interest. You begin at the handsome parish church, which has a carved pulpit and an impressive painting, 'The Flight into Egypt' (1721). The parish stocks - last used to punish a drunk in 1862 - are in the tower. Bampton Castle began as a Norman motte and bailey on top of the old Saxon mound. It was besieged and burnt by King Stephen in 1136.

Other information: 19 stiles, including 4 high ones. This walk is suitable for anyone fairly fit. There are no strenuous climbs, but sharp slopes. Mainly uses footpaths and lanes. This walk should take roughly 3 to 4 hours for the average walker.
