Address:

Tamar Valley
Devon

Website

Distance: 5 miles
Difficulty: Moderate
End points: Bickleigh (Grid Ref SX 524 621)
Collytown (Grid Ref SX 468 650).

This route is just one of many in the West Devon area, and provides the link between the Plym Valley Trail and the Bere Peninsula route, both of which can be found on the Discover Devon website (www.discoverdevon.com).

The surrounding countryside is part of the Tamar Valley Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty and possesses some of the finest scenery in the West Country. Many years of settlement, agriculture and industry have moulded the landscape - and though many of the activities have now ceased, their indelible marks add to the character and distinctiveness of the area

This route is only open between 2 February and 30 September. The river crossing at Lopwell Dam is tidal and you must find out the tide times before setting out on the route. These can be obtained from the tide timetable for Plymouth (available from most newsagents in the area) to which you need to add 9 minutes. It is recommended that you do not try to cross the river for at least two hours either side of high tide. When the tide is particularly high or when there has been heavy rainfall, this period is likely to be longer.

Relevant maps/guides: Explorer (1:25,000) no. OL 108 Lower Tamar Valley & Plymouth, OL 28 Dartmoor; Landranger (1:50,000) no. 201 Plymouth & Launceston, Tavistock & Looe
Facilities along route: There are pubs in Bere Alston and Bere Ferrers once you join up with the Bere Peninsular Route.

Please note that this is not a Devon County Council maintained route.
