Address:

Walkham Valley
Devon

Website

Distance: 8 miles
Difficulty: Moderate
Start/End point: Small car park on the Yelverton-Princetown road near Sharpitor (Grid Ref: SX557707).

Step out of your car high on the edge near Sharpitor and the superb panoramic view will soon entice you down into the beautiful Walkham Valley.

From the smooth, narrow track of the 1820 Plymouth and Dartmoor Railway, paths meander off the moor down to the wooded banks of the river and a peaceful seat below Huckworthy Bridge.

Cross green fields surrounding the church of Sampford Spiney, then descend to Ward Bridge, which has two tunnels in its buttresses to prevent flooding when the river is in spate.

Relevant maps/guides: O.S. Explorer 0L28, Landrangers 202 and 191.
Facilities along route: No information available.
There are 9 stiles, but this route is suitable for all the family, including the dog (who must be kept on a lead in places). The route is mainly footpaths and tracks, with several streches of country lanes. Steep ascents each side of the river. This route should take the average walker roughly 4 hours.
