Something Special
Devon has a varied geology - one of the most diverse in the British Isles, and the county even gives its name to a geological period - Devonian.
Devon is home to England's first natural World Heritage Site - the Jurassic Coast. Located in the east of the county, the site extends for 95 miles, into Dorset, and displays 185 million years of Earth history.
The Tamar Valley in the west of the county demonstrates a wealth of mining heritage landscape. Rich in minerals such as copper, silver and tin, the area's social history has been shaped by the region's geology.
Dartmoor's landscape is charaterised by its granite tors. These craggy outcrops have been formed over the past 280 million years.
