Foodie Devon / Features / Celebrity Chefs
Devon boasts a whole galaxy of top-class celebrity chefs, more than most other counties. Could the reason be anything to do with Devon's wonderfully abundant fresh food?
You've probably watched Hugh Fearnley-Whittingstall, of River Cottage fame, on TV. He recently relocated to the Axe Valley near Axminster, where he found the perfect setting for his enterprise, providing the very best of home-grown and seasonal food.
Michael Caines is another famous chef, and with good cause. Based at prestigious Gidleigh Park since 1994, Michael delights diners with his modern cuisine with a classical inspiration, and certainly has impressed the judges, for Gidleigh has been awarded two Michelin stars and four AA rosettes.
Chef at The New Angel in Dartmouth is John Burton-Race, who opened there in 2004 after a year in France, when he and his family appeared in Channel 4's series 'French leave'. His genius for cooking is undoubted - his Berkshire restaurant L'Ortolan was awarded two Michelin stars and a mere eight months after opening the New Angel he bagged another.
Christopher and James Tanner, of Tanners Restaurant in Plymouth, reached celebrity status appearing on TV food programmes such as 'Ready, Steady, Cook' and their own 'The Tanner Brothers'.
Peter Gorton, of the Horn of Plenty near Tavistock, has credentials going back many years, running one of the county's top restaurants. Here you'll enjoy fabulous food with breathtaking views.
