Green Tourism Business Scheme in Devon

If you are concerned about our world and want to help preserve it, look out for holders of the GTBS award and you can be confident you are doing your bit.

The Green Tourism Business Scheme (GTBS) award gives recognition to places to stay and visit that are actively supporting their local area and the wider environment. Independent experts judge businesses and give them an award which relates to their level of action:

The higher the level of award the more action that is being taken. All GTBS award winners have demonstrated that they are taking action across a wide range of areas such as:

• Energy and water efficiency
• Waste reduction
• Support for local residents and suppliers
• Use of ethical products
• Promoting alternatives to the car
• Contributing to wildlife and the environment

Much activity takes place behind the scenes, but you might notice a greater range of local, organic, fair-trade or natural products or separate bins for recycling. You could be invited to join local efforts, whether it's giving your car a day off, enjoying the local wildlife or having your towels changed only when you ask.

Far from being a return to basics, many of these actions add to your comfort and enjoyment. Just 'Look for the Leaf' when travelling in the South West.

All award winners are evaluated every two years by independent qualified assessors. During a half-day visit to the business, assessors check out all relevant areas, examine records and talk to staff to assess the extent of the business' effort, and give helpful advice on how it can continue improving.
